Water Fountains: A Brief Background

by Wyatt Fisk

The term fountain is constructed after the Latin term fons or fontis which means a source or spring. The history of water fountains can be traced from thousands of years ago. They were originally used to supply drinking and bathe water, and from there they evolved into highly decorative elements that we know today. Although the designs and functions of fountains significantly changed over the years, their appeal has never faded and they are still considered as one of the greatest legacies of antiquity.

From as far back as third millennium B.C., the Mesopotamians used water fountains as parts of their daily living. Most of the fountain ruins found in this area have shown that such water features of that time were made out of solid rocks and were mostly situated near streams. During the ancient times, the need for fountains was dependent on the location of the water supply of a certain civilization. For instance, ancient Egyptians had deviceful water system that allowed them to hoist water from Nile River easily, thereby reducing their need for excessive fountains.

On the other hand, ancient Romans and Greeks brought water down from the mountains by using aqueducts. However, because their water sources were above the level of their cities, they used fountains to properly route their drinking and bathe water. As Romans are known for their sophisticated water systems, they are the ones who first revolutionized the art and technology of fountain designs. As a proof of their ingenuity, they developed and installed several free-standing fountains and wall water fountain features within their city.

During the Renaissance and Baroque ages, the use of wall water fountain, and other fountain types for that matter, had rapidly spread in Europe and other nearby continents. It was during those times when fountains reached their peak, and their purposes had changed dramatically from major drinking and bathing water reservoirs to luxurious interior and exterior designs. Fountains then became the channels to express art forms as seen from the allegorical figures that they were designed after. Sculptures became the principal elements of fountain designs in the Renaissance and Baroque eras.

When the 20th century began, fountains were liberated from their drinking and bathing water supply responsibilities. The 20th century also saw the rise of new fountain materials and technologies. From dull looking fountain designs of ancient civilizations, it is now possible to create copper fountain designs with amplified music and jets of water manipulated by computer programs. Basically, the innovations in technology allow the introduction of a whole new profusion of fountain designs.

Water fountains are essential water features that benefited humans throughout history. Hence, they can be contemplated as one of history's finest gifts. More than their decorative prowess however, fountains nowadays are more appreciated for their stress-relieving capabilities. With this ability, it is no wonder that many home and establishment owners utilize such water features inside their spaces.

Water fountains have been around since ancient civilization. The wall water fountain for instance, was utilized as a drinking and bathe water source by Romans and Greeks. Today however, these water features are primarily used as ornamental features in different places including homes and business establishments. They also come in different designs, like the copper fountain, that provide them their unique finishes.
