Information about Burn Scars and Treatment
Burn injuries have grown tremendously within recent years, and are considered a serious problem. Thankfully it has been in these past several years that medical professionals have truly begun to realize and understand the problems associated with burns. Statistics show that at least fifty percent of burn injuries could have been prevented. But, until we are able to spread more education about burn safety we will have to continue dealing with the after effects of burn injuries which are burn scars.
Types of Burns
The severity and type of burn scarring depends on the type of burn. The severity of the burn is determined by the person's age, as well as the size and depth of the burn. Most commonly, burns are categorized by depth into degrees from first to third. First degree burns affect the surface layer of skin, the epidermis. These cause pain, redness and swelling. With proper treatment of first degree burns it is possible to prevent burn scars. To treat, the skin should be flushed or soaked and then covered with a sterile non adhesive bandage to protect it from friction or pressure. A second degree burn affects the epidermis and the dermis, the top two layers of skin and can cause redness, swelling, pain and blisters. Damage can be done to hair follicles and sweat glands due to second degree burns. To heal burns of the second degree, you should elevate the injured area and cover it with a cool moist sterile bandage. Do not apply cold water, compresses, or any type of ointment nor allow the burn to be contaminated. A third degree burn affects the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis causing charring of the skin or a translucent white color, with coagulated vessels visible just below the skin surface. These burns are so deep that they do damage to the skin tissue and often leave the skin feeling numb. Treat third degree burns similarly to second degree, but make sure you get the person to a medical professional as soon as possible.
Types of Burn Scars
The process to heal burns is similar to other wound healing processes, and will almost surely result in a scar. The three major types of burn related scars are keloid, hypertrophic and contracture. Keloid scars are thick and raise above the skin's surface as well as grow beyond the site of the injury. Hypertrophic scars are thick and raised as well, but remain within the injury site. Contracture scars are those that cause the skin to tighten which can result in the tightening and limited mobility of underlying muscles and tendons.
Surgical Procedures
Two common burn scar removal procedures that help improve scar appearance are dermabrasion and skin grafts. Dermabrasion improves scar appearance, restores skin flexibility and function and corrects disfigurement due to injury. This procedure smoothes scars by shaving or scraping off the top layers of the skin. This is able to smooth the skin surface by will not actually remove the scars. A skin graft is a surgical procedure in which a piece of skin from one area of the patient's body is transplanted to another area of the body. General anesthesia is needed for this type of procedure and healing might take from 6 weeks to a few months to heal. Most skin graft procedures are successful, but some may require additional surgeries if the initial graft does no heal properly.
